Carmen Villarreal Treviño
Carmen Villarreal Treviño leads Casa San Matías, one of Mexico’s oldest family-owned tequila distilleries, proudly crafting tequila since 1886 in the Highlands of Jalisco. Since stepping into the family business in 1997, following the passing of her husband, Don Jesús López Román, she has dedicated herself to honoring its traditions while guiding it toward a sustainable and innovative future.
Under her leadership, Casa San Matías has expanded its global presence with an award-winning portfolio of premium and ultra-premium brands such as Rey Sol. Carmen has championed environmentally responsible production practices, community engagement programs, and initiatives that support the well-being of employees and their families, all with the goal of preserving tequila heritage for future generations.
Deeply connected to her community, Carmen supports projects that promote education, social development, and opportunities for children and women, efforts that reflect her belief that business success should go hand in hand with social responsibility.
Carmen’s signature contribution to The Last Drop is Release No. 40, an exceptional Extra Añejo Tequila shaped by more than a decade of patience and experimentation. Drawn from just three carefully selected casks – two aged for ten years in ex-bourbon barrels and one aged for seven years in a Port pipe – this release reflects Carmen’s long-standing fascination with European cask ageing and her uncompromising approach to quality. It stands as a deeply personal creation, and a defining expression of her craft within The Assembly.
