Richard Seale

Richard was one of the Founder Members of The Assembly, and stands as one of the most respected names in the world of premium rum. He is a fourth-generation Master Distiller & Blender at Foursquare Distillery, Barbados and under his visionary leadership, the distillery has established itself as the standard-bearer for authenticity and uncompromising quality.

Richard’s passion for rum’s rich heritage and history in Barbados has guided his outlook on how to best blend academic rigour with artisanal sensibility – evident in his use of a classic double retort pot still, widely adopted in rum in the early 19th century, specially adapted to function in a vacuum. A 200-year-old method with a modern innovative twist! And the results speak for themselves…

Under Richard’s guidance, Foursquare Distillery has amassed a glittering array of international honours. In 2024, it was a Foursquare rum that took the top Rum Trophy in the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC), just a year after Richard himself was named IWSC Industry Champion, recognising his relentless advocacy for Caribbean rums.
