FOURSQUARE DISTILLERY’S OLDEST RUM EVER RELEASED.
Established by Sir David Seale in 1996, “Foursquare” has become the byword for authentic Barbados rum. Its current steward, fourth generation rum producer Richard Seale, has been at the forefront of the movement to establish legal protections for Barbados rum, in the form of a recognised Geographical Indication to preserve the dignity of this nuanced spirit, and ensure that those that bear the name are a true expression of the land, the process and the people. The rums released under his stewardship have put Barbados firmly on the map and have become treasures coveted by rum connoisseurs worldwide.
For Release No. 43, Seale selected a 2004 blend created from distinct Foursquare distillates, or marques, produced using both pot and column stills. Identified early on for extended maturation, the rum was moved through three successive casks, with each stage chosen according to how the spirit was developing. By 2020, it was already in its second cask; in 2023, it was transferred into very old Port pipes for a third and final maturation. When revisited in 2025, Seale considered the result exceptional.
The finished rum is an homage to the estate rums of Barbados’ past, interpreted through Foursquare’s modern precision and Seale’s deliberate approach to maturation and blending.
“Some blends are designed to blossom after extended maturation. After 10 to 12 years, some will be selected for a second maturation and exceptionally as in this case, some will have a third maturation. At each step, the cask is carefully chosen for the job at hand. The very old port pipes for example were just perfect for an already very old, very good rum.”

APPEARANCE : Deep mahogany
NOSE : opens with layers of marzipan, fresh grapefruit zest, ripe plum and tropical guava, lifted by a hint of black liquorice.
PALATE : fresh and generous, moving through dried mint and eucalyptus into ripe pineapple, tart redcurrant, treacle and baking spice, before dry tobacco leaf and clove carry through the finish.
CONCLUSION : The result is a complex, lively rum whose maturity never comes at the expense of energy.
